Location: Lilly Pilly Place
Lilly Pilly Place is located in the Herston Health Precinct, a newly developing hub strategically located adjacent to world-class health and knowledge institutions, including Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital, The University of Queensland Centre of Clinical Research, and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.
Scope of Works:
Multhana was requested to transform an unused space to into a usable, scenic outdoor area through landscaping construction and softscaping.
Project Outcomes:
Multhana constructed a terraced landscape with a small amphitheatre courtyard and seating, installed stormwater mitigation systems, and planted a selection of carefully chosen plants complementing the location temperature and conditions.
Core Works:
Terraced Landscape
The terraced landscape was achieved by carrying out bulk earthworks to dig up the old concrete, and importing fill to raise the ground level to the new sub-grade. A total of 90 tonnes of rock was moved.
Top soil was then applied to the turf and garden areas.
Amphitheatre Courtyard & Seating
The amphitheatre courtyard and seating areas were constructed with exposed aggregate pavement and in-situ cast concrete seating.
For added seating, spilt-stone cladding and a bullnose cap was applied to the block retaining wall.
Stormwater Mitigation
Multhana demolished the existing drainage in order to construct the new system. A concrete pit was excavated, 18m of ACO strip drain laid, and a guard gate installed to control and redirect storm water run-off.
Plants & Fauna
Aged arborist mulch was applied to the garden areas, followed by a selection of ground cover plants, including Lomandra longifolia, Liriope muscari, and Myoporum parvifolium.
The landscape was completed with a layer of Wintergreen Couch grass and several mature weeping lilly pilly trees (also known as Waterhousia floribundas).
Date of Completion
The project was completed on June 11, 2020, with the area expected to be open for use by the end of the year.
