Scope of Works
Multhana was engaged to deliver the landscape construction component of the IGS Great Hall Enhancement project. This was to be achieved through a combination of hard and soft landscape construction works, including:
- demolition
- civil works
- concrete & blockwork (supply & installation)
- paving (supply & installation)
- softscaping, including supply of plants and materials
- hardscaping, including supply of furniture and fixtures
- irrigation (supply & installation)
- waterproofing
Throughout the project, extensive care was taken to protect all adjacent surfaces and careful planning and coordination were conducted to avoid vehicle movements and deliveries during the school’s peak operating hours.

About the site
Ipswich Grammar School (IGS), a renowned independent Prep-to-Year-12 day and boarding school for boys, sought conservation works in the form of an architecturally designed project to enhance the historic Great Hall and its surrounds.
The iconic Great Hall is protected by the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 and listed on the National Trust of Queensland. Since the 1990s, the monument has been an important part of student welcoming and farewelling traditions, including ringing the school bell located in the Tower to signify the commencement and end of their IGS journey.
The ambitious project was undertaken in stages, including a landscaping enhancement for the Great Hall forecourt and Year 12 quadrangle, followed by refurbishments inside the Great Hall itself.
Project Outcomes
Multhana delivered an enhanced and visually striking outdoor space for the client, providing the school’s students, staff, and visitors with a brand new modern outdoor seating and gathering area outside the Ipswich Grammar Great Hall. Read on to discover how we carried out the project.
Core Works
Demolition of existing area
Extensive demolition was required to prepare for a complete refurbishment of the outdoor space. Multhana demolished the existing concrete slabs, toppings, and other materials and responsibly disposed of them at accredited waste facilities. Other structures in the space, such as boulders, bollards, seats, and furniture, were carefully relocated on the site to allow for later reinstallation.
Compliance with dust and noise suppression was paramount in the demolition process. Preparations were carried out to address the potential of uncovering relic asbestos.
Civil Works
Bulk earthworks and detailed excavations were carried out to establish and maintain the site, including removing surplus soil, installing sub-bases, and completing ground preparation work for the termite reticulation system around the Great Hall.
To maintain site access and ensure dirt/rubble mitigation, site entries were constructed and ramping installed to the kerbing.
Multhana also implemented temporary filtration controls for erosion and sediment within the stormwater system to ensure only clean water was discharged offsite.

Concreting
Multhana then constructed concrete features such as footings, terrace seats, steps, stairs, and retaining walls.

Hardscaping & paving
Multhana carried out blockwork, constructing kerbing, pathways, and concrete edging and mowing strips to the garden and landscaped areas.
Paving was installed in accordance with the Laticrete Specification and the requested pavement pattern.
Walls were constructed using sandstone cladding, and all furniture such as tables, seats, and bollards were supplied and fitted.

Softscaping
All softscaping materials were supplied and installed by Multhana, including topsoil, fertilisers, turf, mulch, and drainage gravel.
Following project completion, Multhana managed the landscape maintenance through a separate maintenance program for the client.

Irrigation
Multhana supplied and installed the irrigation system to support hydration and drainage for the new landscaped areas.
Accurately installing access pathways for irrigation lines between garden beds and soft landscaped areas was paramount for ensuring a complete functioning system.

Completion
The project was completed in multiple stages to minimise disruption to operations at the school, with the final stage completed in May 2022.
